This fall, we will be rolling out Windows 10 (the latest Microsoft operating system) to all staff and faculty computers. Microsoft Office 2016 will be included with the upgrade.

This follows a successful rollout of Windows 10 to all student lab computers.

As well as providing you with the most up-to-date Windows experience that is consistent with the student platfrom, the move to Windows 10 will enable you to:

  • stay secure
Windows 10 delivers more built-in security features.
  • keep up to date with the latest technologies and applications
Windows 10 is compatible with the latest hardware and anything new that’s being developed is being developed for the latest operating systems.

For a full list of features, check out the Windows 10 website.

Rollout Plan for Windows 10

The plan is to roll out Windows 10 by department, starting with ITS.  Timing consideration will be taken into account and scheduling options will be provided.  We will advertise the rollout schedule once we have confirmed dates. If you would like to be an early adopter, please let us know.

Any desktop icons, bookmarks, or signatures you have customized will remain the same.  You will not be required to back up your files prior to the upgrade (though it is good practice to do this anyways by saving your work on the W: drive!).

The upgrade should take approximately 2.5 hours and you may begin the upgrade any time after receiving the notification.

Support

We will be communicating with you throughout the rollout process, so expect notices in Today @ Carleton as well as emails from us or from your Computing Support Unit.

Once your computer has been upgraded, if you experience any issues, please do not hesitate to contact the ITS Service Desk. Also be sure to check out our documentation for Windows 10 users at Carleton.
