Jude Bashto

Degree

Graduating with High Distinction

Bachelor of Economics Honours, Minor in Law

Biography

Jude was born and raised in Amman, Jordan and moved to Canada when she was 19- shortly after her type 1 diabetes diagnosis. It was a very difficult time since she had a lot to get used to! However, it was also very rewarding, since she found her true passion in economics, a second home in Ottawa, and lifelong friends at school and work. Throughout her degree, and thanks to the wonderful professors that inspired and taught her, she has also discovered her passion for econometrics and data science. She hopes that, as time goes on, she can better adapt to the emerging technological tools that are becoming increasingly important for economic analysis. She is particularly passionate about labor and development economics since she believes it is our moral obligation to improve conditions in developing countries. She hopes to one day return to the refugee camps she visited during her volunteer work and help improve their economic conditions.

What will you pursue next?

I found it very difficult to decide what to do next, since there are so many choices! For the time being, I would like to do a master’s degree in economics- but who knows what the future holds? I would rather be robust to changing conditions than plan out a 5-year static trajectory!

Charlie Hutchinson

Degree

Graduating with High Distinction

Bachelor of Economics Honours, Concentration in Economic Theory
& Minor in Political Science

Awards

Awarded the Chancellor’s Medal

Biography

Charlie was born in Whitehorse, Yukon, but raised here in Ottawa. He chose Carleton, originally for political science, in large part because he was not yet ready to leave his hometown. First year economics with Dr. Nick Rowe convinced him to take on economics as a second major, and by the end of his second year, he had switched to the Bachelor of Economics and reduced his study of political science to a minor. He cannot speak highly enough of the faculty in the Department – in particular, he would like to thank Dr. Raul Razo-Garcia for his leadership during the Bank of Canada’s Governor’s Challenge and Dr. Maya Papineau-Koritar for her supervision of my CUROP project on tax rebate expenditure.

What will you pursue next?

I am honoured to be pursuing a Master of Science in Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science next year. I hope to continue my graduate studies thereafter. My interests within economics are diverse, but I’m particularly enthusiastic about expanding my understanding of applied microeconometrics and market-oriented policymaking.

Katarina Milanovic

Degree

Graduating with High Distinction

Bachelor of Economics Honours, Concentration in Mathematics and Quantitative Economics

Awards

Awarded the Senate Medal for Outstanding Academic Achievement

Biography

Katarina spent most of her childhood between Canada and Serbia, where she is originally from. Like many first-generation Canadians, the discrimination and inequality in the education, employment and welfare systems in a country that propagates multiculturalism and acceptance as its founding value became apparent at a very young age. Katarina sees the opportunity to pursue a higher education as a privilege not everyone is offered, especially as a young woman. She is grateful that Carleton University has given her the launching pad to not only further her explicit knowledge of economics and mathematics, but that the institution has fostered her understanding of contemporary ideas across academic disciplines, and continuously helped her to develop a more critical approach to current methods. She would especially like to thank Professors Frances Woolley, Michel Demers, and Dana Galizia for their guidance and knowledge, without which obtaining her bachelor’s degree would have been much more difficult.

What will you pursue next?

I feel very fortunate to have the upcoming opportunity to continue my studies in economics. This coming September, I will be starting the Master of Analysis and Policy in Economics program at the Paris School of Economics. I am extremely excited to start a new European adventure, and I hope to acquire the tools necessary to use my education to actively assist in dismantling oppressive structures and building better economic opportunities for everyone.

Sangmi Lee

Degree

Graduating with High Distinction

Bachelor of Arts Honours, Major in Economics

Awards

Awarded the Senate Medal for Outstanding Academic Achievement

Biography

Sangmi first entered Carleton University as a double major student in Political Science and Law. What she had thought she wanted to study quickly changed as she sat in her Introductions to Economics class that she took by chance. What started as her elective course in her first year quickly became her major as her passion for studying economics continued to grow every year.

Here I am, four years later, as I wrap up my studies at Carleton, leaving the Department of Economics, I would like to sincerely thank all the professors I had the privilege to meet and learn from. I would especially like to share my gratitude to Professors Frances Woolley, Minjoon Lee and Abdullah Zalghout for their tremendous support and time that they’ve dedicate to make my years at Carleton genuinely transformative.

What will you pursue next?

I hold tremendous pride in obtaining the title of Carleton alumni, and I look forward to continuing my economics studies at the graduate level as I start a new chapter of my life at Queen’s University!

Adam Ranallo

Degree

Graduating with High Distinction

Bachelor of Economics Honours

Awards

Awarded the Senate Medal for Outstanding Academic Achievement

Biography

Growing up in Ottawa, Adam chose Carleton University to remain close to friends and family. He originally began his undergraduate degree studying biology and the humanities. However, after discovering a passion for global affairs, he sought to broaden his understanding of the subject by changing his major to economics. Adam was attracted to the diverse range of economics courses taught at the university, especially those concerning international trade and international finance which illustrated the extent the world’s complexity and interconnectedness. Adam also valued the opportunity to conduct economic research in macroeconomics and microeconomics during his final year of undergraduate study. Using real-world macroeconomic data, he examined the relationship between military expenditures and GDP growth in 93 countries. Then using census microdata, Adam investigated how immigrant status affects the income of STEM-educated individuals in Canada.

What will you pursue next?

I often use the skills I acquired from Carleton’s economic program, such as research and data analysis, in my current student position working for the Government of Canada. I will also be returning to Carleton University in the fall to pursue a Master of Arts in International Affairs with the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs.

Sabreen Sidhu

Degree

Graduating with High Distinction

Bachelor of Economics Honours, Concentrations in Economic Theory & Financial Economics

Biography

In high school, Sabreen took her first economics course and fell in love with the content and decided to pursue it, in good part due to a phenomenal educator, Mr. Braden Hutchinson. During her time at Carleton, she really enjoyed the courses – particularly, European Economic Integration (by Prof. Crina Viju) and Derivatives (by Prof. Yuriy Zabolotnyuk) and by extension, the Financial Economics concentration courses. In the course of her undergrad, she had the opportunity to be President of the Carleton Undergraduate Economics Society where alongside running social and academic events, she made some of her closest friends. Later on, she had the chance to volunteer for the World Economic Forum and help launch a financial literacy webinar as well as gain internship experience at Statistics Canada and in Risk Management. Outside the Loeb Economics Lounge, she played an excessive amount of ultimate frisbee, took up sustainable dressmaking and tried out adrenaline sports (most recently: skydiving and shipwreck free diving)!

What will you pursue next?

Moving forward, I’m excited to be heading to the University of Toronto for the Master of Financial Economics!

*Special thanks to Professors Hashmat Khan, Michel Demers, Chris Gunn, Radovan Vadovic and Valerie Rochester for all your support and kindness throughout the last 4 years.*
