Ruth Panofsky is Professor of English at Toronto Metropolitan University. She is a leading scholar of the history of publishing and authorship in Canada and Canadian Jewish literature, with an emphasis on women. Panofsky is the chief specialist on novelist Adele Wiseman and poet Miriam Waddington. Her pioneering studies of Canadian women and Jewish writers have advanced new research fields, and her textual scholarship has made the work of novelists and poets available to a wide audience in print and digital editions.
Panofsky has been a Visiting Professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; Visiting Affiliate Scholar of Jewish Studies at Florida Atlantic University; Visiting Professor of Creative Writing at Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany; and Visiting Scholar at Massey College. She received Toronto Metropolitan University’s Sarwan Sahota Distinguished Scholar Award for outstanding contribution to knowledge or artistic creativity in 2016 and the Louis Rosenberg Canadian Jewish Studies Distinguished Service Award in 2017. Panofsky is also a Fellow of the Royal Society.
Panofsky has guest edited two special issues of Canadian Jewish Studies / Études juives canadiennes: volume 11 on Canadian Jewish Women Writers (2003) and volume 32 on Canadian Holocaust Literature (2021). Her publications include The Force of Vocation: The Literary Career of Adele Wiseman (2006) and At Odds in the World: Essays on Jewish Canadian Women Writers (2008). She is the editor of the award-winning two-volume Collected Poems of Miriam Waddington: A Critical Edition (2014). Recently, she edited The New Spice Box: Canadian Jewish Writing (2017) and The New Spice Box: Contemporary Jewish Writing (2020).
Panofsky is also an award-winning poet. She received the Helen and Stan Vine Canadian Jewish Book Award for Laike and Nahum: A Poem in Two Voices (2007) and a Hadassah-Brandeis Institute Research Award for Radiant Shards: Hoda’s North End Poems (2020).
