Congratulations to Jay Ramasubramanyam, a PhD candidate in the Law and Legal Studies program, for winning the 2018-2019 TD Graduate Fellowship in Migration and Diaspora Studies!
The Fellowship is awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs to a full-time graduate student who is pursuing courses in Migration and Diaspora Studies. Established in 2014, the award provides support for graduate students engaged in topics relating to the cultural, social, economic and political implications of the movement and transnational settlement of people.
Jay is currently studying the characterization and construction of ‘refugeehood’ in India and will examine the understandings that have guided such constructions. His project will relate to the broader significance of such conceptualizations with respect to refugee protection in South Asia and more generally in relation to the global refugee regime. By placing India’s historical relationship with involuntary migrants, his project will bring a new dimension to discussions on mobility in the region.
Prior to his doctoral candidature, he was employed by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as a Refugee Status Determination Associate and in the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) as a Protection Field Officer.
