The Course introduces you to the politics of gender and its intersection with various other axes of identity such as sexuality, class, race, indigeneity, nation, tribe, and religion in the Global South. We explore classical and contemporary political processes through a gendered lens by exploring questions of colonialism, nationalism, democratization, citizenship, development, governance, political economy, ethno-religious mobilization, political ecology, and indigenous politics. The course familiarizes you with a diverse range of case studies from Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia and acquaints you with the politics of transnational feminist movements and international organizations such as the United Nations.

Gopika Solanki is Associate Professor of Political Science. Her research interests include gender and politics, state-society relations, cultural pluralism and citizenship, legal pluralism and judicial politics, ethnic politics, religion and politics, global Indigenous politics, and South Asian politics.
