What is an International Exchange?
An international exchange allows students to pursue the equivalent of full-time study at one of Carleton’s many partner universities around the world. Students pay tuition to Carleton while on exchange and can transfer credits toward their Carleton degree.
This program is administered by the International Student Services Office (ISSO). You may go on exchange in either the Fall or Winter term, or both.
Carleton University also offers many other opportunities to study, intern or volunteer abroad beyond the Exchange Program. The ISSO website is a great place to start researching these programs.
- Why go on International Exchange?
-
There are many reasons to go on Exchange! An exchange is an opportunity to:
- Gain in-depth knowledge and experience of another culture and/or language;
- Experience your academic subject or worldview through a new lens;
- Develop transnational competencies and cross-cultural communication skills;
- Develop independence, flexibility, resilience, and the ability to adapt to new circumstances.
- Am I eligible to go on Exchange?
-
Undergraduate students considering an Exchange must hold at least 2nd year standing and have enough credits remaining in their degree to study full-time at the partner institution. A minimum overall CGPA of 7.0 in completed courses is required.
- Where can I go on Exchange?
-
You can review the list of Carleton University’s partner institutions. Researching the partner institutions is your responsibility. Remember to check for any restrictions indicated on the partner institution list; not all exchange partners are open to all students.
- Will all my Exchange courses count toward my degree?
-
The Registrar’s Office maintains a Course Equivalencies Database which includes any courses from our partner institutions that have been assessed for Carleton credit in the past three years. Please read the disclaimer carefully before exploring this resource. Not all courses offered by a partner university will be listed in this database.
You should also visit the International Exchange: FAQ page maintained by the Registrar’s Office to get a better understanding of how credits earned during exchange transfer back to a Carleton degree.
- When do I apply for Exchange?
-
Applications to participate in the Exchange Program in the next academic year open each fall for a limited period of time in Carleton Central. It is very important to check the application deadline for the year you are applying.
