Safety Announcement for Personal Scooter and Bicycle Riders on Campus

Attention, scooter and bicycle riders! To keep our pedestrian-friendly campus safe for everyone, please follow these important safety guidelines:

  1. Yield to Pedestrians: Pedestrians always have the right of way. Slow down and be cautious in high-traffic areas, especially near crosswalks and building entrances.
  2. Obey Road Signs and Signals: Just like cars, scooters and bicycles must follow all campus road signs, stop signs, and traffic signals. These rules are in place for your safety.
  3. Maintain Safe Speeds: Stick to a moderate speed, particularly in congested areas or near pedestrians. Slow down in zones with heavy foot traffic.
  4. Use Designated Paths: Ride only on marked bike lanes or shared-use paths where available. Avoid sidewalks unless they’re designated for scooter or bike use. Bicycles and Scooters are not permitted in the tunnels.
  5. Stay Alert: Be aware of your surroundings. Watch for pedestrians, other riders, and vehicles, and avoid distractions like using your phone or wearing headphones while riding.
  6. Park Responsibly: Always park in designated bike or scooter racks. Don’t block sidewalks, building entrances, or pedestrian paths. Secure bicycle and scooter compounds are also available for a fee. Bicycle Compounds – Parking Services (carleton.ca)
  7. Wear Helmets: Protect yourself by wearing a helmet at all times.
  8. Register your bike. Protect your bike by using the Ottawa bicycle registry program, 529 Garage, overseen by Ottawa Police. Bike registration to reduce theft and help recovery | 529 Garage (project529.com)

By following these guidelines, you help create a safer campus environment for everyone. Thank you for riding responsibly!
