Theatre of the Oppressed – April 13, 2023

Thursday, April 13, 2023 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Theatre of the Oppressed

Join the Umoja Black Community Engagement Program in collaboration with the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) and Carleton University’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology, for a presentation of Race, Gender and Class: Through the Arts. This presentation is the result of the hard work of third year Carleton undergraduate students who had the unique opportunity to work alongside OCSB high school students to create an artistic social justice project that addresses social oppression. There are three student written plays that will be performed. Audience members will participate as “spect-actors” who have the chance to intervene in the scenes and advocate for better social outcomes.

Characters in each play are fictional, and not based upon, and do not seek to represent, any real person(s). These characters were created for the purpose of creating discomfort within viewers in efforts to provoke self reflection. These characters do not in any way represent the students or faculty in Ottawa Catholic District School Board or at Carleton University.

Trigger Warning

The plays contain subject matter intended for a mature audience. It may not be suitable for those 13 years or younger. Please be advised that some of the content may potentially be offensive, challenging, and/or upsetting.
