Hair, Mind, Body & Soul: A Collective Self-Care Gathering
As Umoja Celebrates Black History, we also celebrate the uniqueness of the experiences of Black women and Black gender-diverse individuals.
This will be an event for Black women and Black gender-diverse community members, centering self-care and HIV self-testing, as Black women account for 60% of all HIV diagnoses amongst women in Ontario. In all, we feel this event will have a positive impact on the community by opening up and creating a culturally-safe space for Black women and Black gender-diverse folks to talk freely about hair health, mental health, sexual health, body care, HIV and how all can be seen as forms of self-care.
Umoja is partnering with Somerset West Community Health Centre (SWCHC), Aids Committee of Ottawa, BLKGURI, and Ottawa Public Health for this exciting event.
This event will be divided into 4 parts and led by several Black facilitators:
February 4:
- Hair: conversations on hair maintenance, hair as part of holistic health & impacts of texturism and hair discrimination
- Mind: conversations on centering & destigmatizing black mental health
February 11:
- Body: focus on re-centering ourselves through yoga and skincare
- Soul: plant therapy and guided mediation to reset and reclaim our roots and to close the event
