Vicky McArthur, associate professor for the Bachelor of Media Production and Design program, has just been awarded a NSERC Engage Grant. This is the first time a professor in the Faculty of Public Affairs has secured this funding.

The NSERC Engage Grant is designed to give companies access to the expertise available at Canadian universities. The grant is intended to foster the development of new research partnerships between an academic researcher and a company by supporting short-term projects related to the natural sciences and engineering.

For her project, McArthur will be partnering with IBM to look at the topic of leveraging data analytics to support customization of inclusive wearable devices.

“We will explore the use of IBM Watson technology to support the mass-customization of wearable technologies for everyday use,” McArthur said. “Commercial applications for wearable technologies have been mostly limited to health monitoring (e.g., fitness trackers) or accessibility. Although wearable technologies are becoming more common and affordable, there are still many potential applications for wearables to improve Canadians’ lives that are yet unknown.”
