Five veteran journalists from the CBC, CTV, Global and The Logic have been added to Carleton’s team of contract instructors for the winter term.

The part-time contract instructors, many of whom continue to work with major media organizations, bring fresh perspectives straight from the workplace and complement the efforts of the 16 full-time journalism faculty members on duty this winter.

The new journalism contract instructors join a team of more than two dozen part-time instructors for the 2021-22 academic year.

The new winter term contract instructors include:

April Fong, JOUR 4302 Business Reporting

April Fong has been a digital journalist specializing in business and tech news for more than a decade. She is currently The Logic’s deputy managing editor. Prior to that, April was senior digital producer of BNN Bloomberg, overseeing the editorial content of its digital platforms—including its RTDNA Award-nominated news app. She also worked as a digital producer at the Financial Post, where among other things she helped turn FP Tech Desk into one of the Post’s most popular verticals. April also spent four years in Shanghai as an editor for China Economic Review and Talk Magazines. She holds a Bachelor of Journalism at Carleton University, Master of Arts in Chinese Politics and Diplomacy from Fudan University in Shanghai, and has also completed the Canadian Securities Course.

Ahmar Khan, JOUR 2201: Fundamentals of Reporting

Ahmar Khan is a National Online Journalist with Global News. Prior to joining Global News, he spent six years in television, radio and digital media reporting. He has worked in newsrooms in Ottawa, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Victoria, Kamloops, and Toronto. Ahmar’s coverage focuses on issues surrounding vulnerable people, racialized communities and politics. Gabriela Perdomo Paez, JOUR 1003: Discovering Journalism – Traditional tales to tweets

Gabriela Perdomo is a journalist, educator and researcher in the field of journalism studies. She started her career as a broadcast reporter in Bogotá, Colombia, before obtaining a Master of Journalism degree from the University of British Columbia. Her work has appeared in several publications including The Tyee and Maclean’s. Gabriela is currently finishing a PhD in communication at the University of Ottawa. Her research and teaching interests include anti-media criticism, the changing roles and norms of journalism and the rise of explanatory journalism.  Gabriela is the co-creator and host of Periodemica, a Spanish-language podcast about Latin American researchers who thrive in academia all around the world.

Megan Shaw, JOUR3208: Video Journalism

Megan Shaw anchors CTV News at 11:30pm and is a reporter on CTV News. Arriving to the nation’s capital in 2015, Megan Shaw quickly became a trusted voice in Ottawa. She covers everything from breaking news to current affairs, where she offers an honest approach to every story she takes on. She is an experienced multi-skilled journalist who reports, writes, produces and anchors. Megan holds an honours BA from the University of Windsor in English & Communication, Media, Film Studies (CMF). She also attended the Broadcast Journalism program at Seneca College and is currently completing the Master of Journalism program at Carleton.

Lucy van Oldenbarneveld, JOUR5202: Broadcast journalism lab (video)

Lucy van Oldenbarneveld came to Ottawa in 2003 to work as a writer-broadcaster and host of CBC Radio’s Ottawa Morning, after reporting for Deutsche Welle in Germany. Prior to that she worked at CBC Whitehorse, and spent a year working in China. In 2006, Lucy left radio for the bright lights of television, becoming the host of CBC News at 6, where she was eventually joined by co-host Adrian Harewood. She retired from CBC last summer to pursue other projects. As a side note, Lucy has a Hollywood connection. She has been known to portray journalists on the big screen, as she did in the 2019 movie Long Shot, starring Seth Rogan and Charlize Theron, and in the 2016 film Arrival, starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker.
