From Serial to the Kardashians, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo to Buzzfeed, my dissertation will explore a variety of ways in which audiences react to the ‘strange’ in popular culture. In contrast to the recent popularity of fan studies, I am interested in examining a broader range of receptive and reactive practices including disavowing audiences, lurking audiences, and suspicious or investigative audiences. This work will also include a re-thinking of textuality and the politics of the popular. My other research interests include responsibilization, representations of family and domesticity, and overconsumption.
