    Biography

Originally from Placentia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Ely graduated from Memorial University with an undergraduate degree in English and Law and Society. Her honours thesis covered Afrofuturism and Africana-womanism in Marvel’s Black Panther and Wakanda Forever. For a time, Ely wrote with the MUN Student Editorial, the Muse, volunteered with the campus radio station CHMR, and co-hosted a radio show with friends.

During their time at Memorial, Ely held an Executive Director position on the Student Union and represented students with disabilities on the Canadian Federation of Students NL provincial executive committee. They are a dedicated activist with a focus on decolonization, equity, diversity, and anti-racism.

A proud Mi’kmaq student, Ely is familiar with how storytelling plays a large part in connecting with others. By completing an MJ, Ely hopes to highlight people’s lived experiences and someday have their own radio show. When she’s not studying, Ely is doing yoga, doing collaborative creative writing with friends, reading a book, or doing bead artwork.
