SOCI/ANTH 2180 Survey- Student Research Project to Support The Reduction of Bird Mortality from Window Collisions
Windows of Opportunities: Student Research Project to Support the Reduction of Bird Mortality frow Window Collisions
By Abby Adair
Students in the Fall 2023 term of SOCI/ANTH 2180: Foundations of Community Engagement course taught by Dr. Deborah Conners are collaborating with Community Associations for Environmental Sustainability (CAFES) Ottawa, Safe Wings Ottawa, and the Carleton Institute of Environmental Sciences to collect data on local bird-window collisions. Students and partners have launched a survey campaign to learn more about collisions in the city, assess community willingness to engage with the issue, and encourage community members to take action to safeguard local birds.
Survey respondents who indicate an interest in taking action will be offered free samples of Feather Friendly window markers, adhesive dots that are applied to the exterior of windows to make glass more visible to birds. In addition, Safe Wings Ottawa, CAFES, and participating community associations are offering a workshop on November 13 for survey respondents who indicate they would like to learn more about bird-window collisions, and the application of materials on windows.
