Student Activism in Canada and South Africa: Discussing The Art of Fallism

Friday, March 11 at 11:30 am to Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at 1:30 pm

The Sociology and Anthropology Student Association (SASA), the Institute of African Studies Student Association (IASSA), the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Institute of African Studies, the Film Studies program of Carleton University and the South African Film Festival Canada (SAFF Canada) are pleased to present Student Activism in Canada and South Africa: Discussing The Art of Fallism.

Join the virtual discussion of the South African/Norwegian documentary, The Art of Fallism (2019), that teases out the nuanced, yet deeply complex stories of the student struggles in South Africa built around #RhodesMustFall and #FeesMustFall. These reawakened a vibrant history of South African student protest movements and propelled political art practices, under the banner of “Fallism,” to push the limits of critical thought. Join us in a lively discussion of the film itself with the film producers and a group Carleton University student activists and leaders who will discuss the film’s resonances and dissonances on current student struggles in Canada.

SAFF Canada explores the culture, history and politics of South Africa through its annual Film Festival. It is part of a larger group of international charitable organizations, the South African Film Festivals, which raise money to promote education among disadvantaged and at-risk learners in South Africa and Canada.

Please watch the film here before the event on March 11.
