Writing the Teaching Philosophy Statement

Wednesday, April 7 at 12:00 pm to Monday, December 29, 2025 at 2:00 pm

Teaching philosophy statements are central elements of your teaching dossier and the first introduction prospective employers may have to your teaching style. They play important roles in an academic’s career advancement, and most faculty will need to revisit, revise, and edit these statements throughout their careers. Writing a teaching philosophy also offers an excellent opportunity to reflect on your pedagogical commitments and practices. This workshop will introduce you to this unique piece of academic writing, situate it in relationship to the teaching dossier as a whole, and give you an opportunity to begin developing your own teaching philosophy statement.

This event will be co-facilitated by Morgan Rooney and Sarah Rodimon. All grad students, postdocs and recent alumni are welcome, though space is limited!

The Graduate Student Transitions Series is a peer-based workshop series that focuses on equipping graduate students and recent alumni with resources, strategies and information about a wide range of career paths available post-grad school. These hands-on, skill-building workshops cover a range of topics, from developing essential tools for the job market (CVs, resumes, teaching dossiers) to navigating the job market itself (networking, applying for postdocs, preparing for interviews and job talks).
