“Becoming a student in the Sociology department at Carleton has changed how I see the world and the importance of theory to understanding the issues and complexities of our society. Professors are genuinely passionate about their teaching, which inspired me to pursue a scholarly career. I have gained research, critical thinking, and analytical skills over the course of my studies. These skills are hugely beneficial when applying them in my current workplace as a housing Support Worker.

I am grateful for the opportunities my degree has presented. One that I took part in was the Student as Partners Program (SaPP). This program gave me the space to be actively involved in the curriculum design of a new course. I assisted professor Pum van Veldhoven in designing SOCI 3220. The course looks at the ageing workforce and the future of work and touches on concepts such as intersectionality, labour market and ageism. Furthermore, I also participated in a practicum placement with the Canadian Partnership for Women and Children’s Health (CanWaCH). I gained knowledge on how to write a research report for a development organization. Through these experiences, I was able to apply what I had learned in the classroom to a hands-on work environment.

Ultimately, my time at Carleton as a Sociology student has enriched my experience. I know it is helping me to lay the foundation as I apply for graduate studies.”
