- PhD Anthropology (2025)
My time in the Sociology and Anthropology program at Carleton has been incredibly meaningful. Coming from a science and development background, with years of work in Africa, I wasn’t sure how to bridge those worlds with anthropology — but Blair and Louise made that journey possible. Blair’s big-picture questions and steady guidance challenged me to think more deeply and critically about power and politics, while Louise’s care and sharp insights helped me navigate the complexities of writing and fieldwork.
My dissertation explored women’s empowerment in Sudan’s wheat sector, critically examining how development programs shape — and are reshaped by — women’s lived experiences and resistance. I’m also deeply grateful to the incredible administrative staff — Paula, Darlene, Patricia, and Kiley — whose kindness and support made such a difference throughout this journey. Their care, alongside the mentorship I received, turned challenges into growth and made the department a space where my work could truly take shape.
Future Plans
I’m currently working in agricultural policy and research at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, where I bridge my background in science, development, and anthropology. Moving forward, I hope to bring a critical lens to how policies and programs address gender and equity, engaging thoughtfully with ideas of women’s empowerment to ensure that agricultural initiatives promote more just and sustainable futures.
