Community Voices
Thursday, March 23, 2023 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm
- In-person event
The Community Voices series is an annual event, learning from the knowledge, expertise and experience of community leaders. It’s hosted by the Decolonization and Antiracism Committee in the Department of Sociology & Anthropology.
This year, our focus will be struggles for migrant justice, the ongoing campaign for Status For All, and regularization.
We’ll hear from Marina Goma and Sinda Garziz about ongoing work here in Ottawa, as well as thoughts about how to take forward the energy of the March 18th and 19th actions for regularization across Canada. All welcome!
Our panelists:
Sinda is an African-Arab immigrant, born and raised in Tunisia, who came to Canada in 2013. She is a migrant justice activist abd completed her first BA in Psychology at the Human Science Institute of Tunis. She has been a part of the transnational network Afrique-Europe Interact advocating against borders, visa regimes, and providing support for migrants and refugees in different countries in South Europe and North Africa. She has also organized with No One Is Illegal both in Berlin and in Ottawa. She recently completed her second BA in Conflicts and Human Rights Studies from the University of Ottawa. She is currently involved in The End Immigration Network, The Sanctuary City Network and Refugee Welcome. She is also a youth program facilitator at the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO).
Marina migrated to Ottawa as an international graduate student five years ago. Appalled by the so-called refugee crisis and the rise of the far-right in Europe and North-America, Marina has closely followed the Status for All movement in Spain, the UK, and now Canada. Marina wishes to see fair and equitable work conditions for all migrants, something that simply cannot be achieved without permanent resident status for all
