After two long years of unjust and unlawful detention as a political prisoner in Turkey, Cihan Erdal has safely returned to Canada. The Department of Sociology & Anthropology alongside the Department of Law and Legal Studies invites you to a panel discussion.
This panel discussion extends an invitation to discuss the potential and power of collective action across borders as an antidote to forms of political evilness and authoritarianism experienced across historical eras. This form of evil is manifest in the detention of academic-activist Erdal, along with what other political hostages in Turkey experienced. This is also an invitation to think collectively about how to build ‘another academia’ that fights against injustices including arbitrary detention and its threat to academic freedom.
Dean Pauline Rankin will be making opening remarks, followed by our speakers Cihan Erdal, Ömer Ongun, and Dr. Jacqueline Kennelly. This panel will be chaired by Dr. Blair Rutherford.
This panel will be held both in-person and online. Please register here by Oct 28th and indicate which method you will be attending by.
