Truth, Reconciliation, and Post-Secondary Education in Canada: Implementation of the TRC’s Calls to Action

Thursday, February 10 at 2:30 pm to Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at 4:00 pm

This presentation will provide a brief overview of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission into the legacy of its Indian Residential School System followed by an analysis of its Calls to Action for postsecondary institutions in Canada. Brock worked for the TRC (2010-2013) before returning to the academic world with appointments at the University of Sudbury (2013-2018) and now York University. Brock will provide a faculty member’s perspective on some of the institutional challenges and opportunities that arose in the process of implementing the TRC Calls to Action including the merits and pitfalls of mandatory Indigenous content courses.

Brock’s talk will be followed by an open discussion.

Brock Pitawanakwat (Anishinaabe – Whitefish River First Nation) is the Coordinator of the Indigenous Studies Program at York University and an Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities.

This lecture is part of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology Colloquium Series.
