“I came to the Anthropology program like many others, dreams of cargo shorts and magnifying glasses; of one day discovering long-lost ruins or uncontacted indigenous groups in the Amazon.
Somewhere along the way, however, I decided I was more interested in understanding business problems and how to solve them. I’ve worked in the software industry alongside many finance and business graduates, realizing that I have a unique perspective that has led to some great success in my role. The numerous case studies, blind surveys, and comparative analyses have allowed me to develop an ability to think critically in a business environment, to connect with people on a deeper level, and apply empathy – which has been particularly useful during times of economic uncertainty.
There are many things I’d have learned with a business-oriented degree that I’ve had to pick up on the job, but the unique thinking skills I’ve acquired in the Carleton Anthropology program are what have truly set me apart.”
