Margaret Brierley

Funeral Director at Tubman Funeral Homes

In my role as a Funeral Director, I work closely with individuals and families from a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds, often during an extremely vulnerable and difficult time in people’s lives. Navigating different belief systems, religious traditions, and personal approaches to grief can be complex, particularly in a professional environment where sensitivity is essential.

My studies at Carleton played a significant role in preparing me for these realities. Anthropology, in particular, reshaped the way I understand the world and deepened my appreciation for the diversity of human experience. It strengthened my ability to listen without judgment and to respect the values and choices that shape how people honor their loved ones.

Beyond academics, the program supported my personal and professional growth, helping me develop the maturity and perspective necessary for this field. Although death remains a difficult and often avoided subject in our society, my background in Anthropology has equipped me with the insight and confidence to guide families with compassion. It continues to make my transition into funeral service both meaningful and rewarding.
