"I attended Carleton in the early 2000s as a doctoral student in Sociology. I cannot speak too highly of what a wonderful and foundational experience I had getting my PhD. I was fortunate to have fabulous supervisors, committee members, professors and staff who laid the groundwork for my career as an academic. There are three key takeaways from my time there that I want to share. First, the department provided a tailored approach to study that challenges students to be rigorous, deal with complexity, and create research that is thorough and meaningful. Secondly, the faculty and staff were empathetic with a genuine commitment to student success. This meant that a dialogic approach to communication was fostered through the faculty’s and staff’s sincere interest in the students. And lastly, the members of the department demonstrated academic humility and pride in their work and that of their students. It is hard to believe that it has been more than 15 years since I graduated, but I continue to feel the positive influence bestowed upon me by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. It has so much been the case, that I continue to send bright Honours Sociology students on to Carleton to further their studies."
