Nicholas Scott

“I chose Sociology and Anthropology at Carleton for my Master’s degree, and had such a positive experience that I stayed in the department for my PhD (turning down U of T). My supervisor throughout, Dr. Janet Siltanen, cultivated a profoundly empowering and collegial space for critical inquiry, curiosity and methodological creativity. Working with Janet and other deeply inspiring professors including Jacqueline Kennelly, Steve Prus and Aaron Doyle, while feeding off the ideas and energy of brilliant colleagues like Karen Foster, Dale Spencer and Kevin Walby, led me to a rewarding career in academia. Had I stepped into the federal civil service instead (which I considered for a hot minute), I know I would have been equally well prepared after my sociological training at Carleton. In short, whether it was in graduate seminars, at Mike’s Place or on the soccer pitch with fellow students and footballing professors like Blair Rutherford, at Carleton I found my community of scholars and the burning ideas that guide my work today.”
