Boxing in Bukom is the story of 12-year-old Michael Dicadi Nelson, a young boxer from the small community of Bukom, in downtown Accra, Ghana. Despite its lack of resources and training facilities, Bukom produces a huge number of Africa’s top boxers. Children like Nelson learn to fight in the street, barefoot and sometimes bare knuckled. Winter photographed Nelson over the course of two months as he prepared to face another young fighter for the Accra juvenile championship title.
