Carleton University invites applications from outstanding research scholars for an NSERC Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Health Care Simulation, to be held at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor, with tenure. Tier 1 Canada Research Chairs are intended for outstanding researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields. Appointment is conditional on the approval of the nomination by the CRC Program.
The successful candidate will demonstrate an internationally recognized program of Natural Sciences and Engineering (NSE) research that advances the application and development of computer science, AI, data science, and or augmented / virtual reality as they relate to health care simulation, outcome-based performance, training and coaching systems, and simulation-informed design thinking. The successful incumbent will be a strategic and independent NSE research leader who is excited by the opportunity to build on a strong foundation while shaping a largely open research landscape. This is a builder role suited to a scholar who seeks a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment and who will actively pursue partnerships across academic, clinical, and technology communities.
Research Focus
The Chair’s research program must align with the subject matter eligibility of NSERC, with a primary emphasis on technology development and application, while clearly demonstrating impact within health and health care contexts. Areas of research interest include, but are not limited to:
- Health care simulation systems and platforms.
- Artificial intelligence and data-driven approaches to simulation, training, and performance assessment.
- Virtual, augmented, and mixed reality applications in healthcare delivery, education and practice.
- Human-centered systems design and outcome-based evaluation in simulated environments.
- Computational modeling and analytics to support healthcare decision-making, learning, and safety.
- Simulation-based NSE innovations in healthcare.
- Candidates may be appointed in the Nursing, Computer Science, or another academic unit, with cross-appointment opportunities available where appropriate.
- While direct clinical research experience is not required, the successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to health-driven research questions and meaningful engagement with health education and practice contexts.
About the Academic Unit
In addition to leading a high-impact research program, the Chair will serve as a senior research informant and academic leader supporting the development of Carleton University’s graduate programs in Nursing and interprofessional health education.
The successful candidate will:
- Contribute to shaping technology-forward graduate curricula and research
- Mentor graduate students and postdoctoral fellows drawn from nursing, computer science, or engineering
- Play a formative role in developing graduate programming
- Collaborate with colleagues to embed simulation, data science, and emerging technologies across teaching and research
Carleton’s School of Nursing welcomed its inaugural undergraduate cohort in September 2025 and is experiencing exceptional demand. Graduate programming is under active development, offering a rare opportunity for a Tier 1 Chair to influence program architecture from the outset.

Qualifications
Carleton University requires:
- A PhD in health technology, computer science, engineering, nursing with a technology focus, or a closely related discipline.
- An internationally recognized record of research excellence and leadership appropriate for an NSERC Tier 1 CRC nomination.
- A sustained record of high-impact publications and successful external NSE-focused research funding.
- Demonstrated exceptional training and mentorship program for diverse undergraduate and graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows.
- A collaborative approach to research and a strong commitment to mentoring.
- Dedication to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in research design and practice, and mentoring.
- Demonstrated record of innovative and scholarly NSE research and the ability to lead an externally funded, high quality research program.
- High potential for collaborative research with existing members of Nursing and or Computer Science is an asset.
- A willingness to comply with funders’ terms and conditions for research security compliance.
