This talk will examine how bottom-up mobilization has transformed civil society’s political role and its relationship to grassroots struggles in contemporary Georgia. By analyzing recent anti-authoritarian struggles, Qeburia examines the contested and evolving political terrains where new traditions of democratic engagement and participation are being forged. Can established civil society organizations overcome their historical limitations and become genuine forces for democratic resistance – or do they remain constrained by their institutional positioning and relationship to donor-driven frameworks?
Speaker: Tamar Qeburia, Research associate, Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (Regensburg, Germany)
Date: Thursday, January 29th
Time: 11:30am
Location: Tory Building 431, Carleton University
