Courses for Fall 2025
- PHIL 1550: Intro to Ethics and Social Issues
Biography: My research interests can be categorized by a theme: the self and agency. I am interested in philosophical questions that pertain to individual freedom and identity. I am actively involved in contemporary debates about free will and moral responsibility, and determinism. My research interests are primarily in attempting to construct and defend a libertarian theory of free will alongside a narrative view of personal identity. I call this view “narrative self-formation,” and I think about how the story-like structure of persons and their lives can mitigate the force of what is known as the luck objection. My view of free will leads me to investigate issues about personal identity as well as immortality and the badness of death, and the logical problem of evil in the philosophy of religion.
In addition to my academic work, I enjoy spending lots of time with my wife and our cat. We enjoy going to the NAC and art galleries. My dad was Italian and a professional chef who taught me a few skills when I was young, and so I like to spend time in the kitchen cooking Italian and other cuisines, as well as learning new dishes.
