Course Description/Instructors Statement

Welcome to PSYC 1002! This course is intended to provide you with a broad overview of psychology as a social science. Throughout the term we will explore the psychological foundations of cognition, human development, motivation, emotion, personality, social processes, stress and mental health. Each week we will trace the historical roots, consider competing theories, explore evolving concepts and learn about the methods used within each of these domains in order to understand and critically evaluate current research in the field. An emphasis will be placed on real world relevance and applications. This course is, therefore, designed for those interested in pursuing a career in psychology as well as those who are simply interested in understanding human behaviour.

Evaluation

Evaluation for this course will consist of two midterm tests and one final exam. Tests and exams will cover content presented in class lectures, the course textbook and any other assigned readings and materials. Knowledge of course content will be evaluated through multiple choice questions as well as short answer responses. The breakdown of the total grade is as follows:

Midterm 1: 25%

Midterm 2: 35%

Final Exam: 40%

Course Description/Instructors Statement

PSYC1002R will continue our introduction to the world of psychology, placing an emphasis on people as social animals. Starting where PSYC1001 left off, PSYC1002R will deal with human intelligence; psychological testing; motivation, emotion, human development; stress and mental health; psychological disorders; treatment; and social behaviour. By the end of the semester we will have completed a survey of most of the major topics in contemporary psychology.

This is a totally online course with no physical classroom or required meeting times! It is self-paced which means that you have to motivate yourself to view the lecture video Modules, test yourself with the Quizzes, and schedule yourself for the Exams.

Evaluation

Self-Tests: There are between 6 and 9 video Modules per Chapter in PSYC1002R for a total of 61 Modules with a Self-Test after each one. Each Self-Test is worth 0% in terms of final course grade but Brightspace stores your performance and you must earn 50% or greater on all the Self-Tests in a Chapter before you can access the Chapter Quiz.

Chapter Quiz: Each Chapter has a Quiz that you can try twice. Each Quiz has 10 questions drawn at random from a larger pool. The Introductory material in what I call Chapter 00 has a Quiz worth 4%. The rest of Chapters 9-16 also have Quizzes that you can try twice and Brightspace will store the average of both tries (or just your first try if you only try once). The maximum you can earn on each of the Chapter 9-16 Quizzes is 2%. Counting Chapter 00 plus Chapter 9-16, you can earn a total of 20% of your final course grade in the Quizzes.

Exams: You will have 3 exams in this course, each consisting of multiple-choice questions drawn at random from a larger pool. Unlike Quizzes, you only have 1 try per Exam.

Exam 1 has 65 questions and is worth 15%. You can take Exam 1 anytime you want, 24/7 but only after you have earned 40% or greater on Quiz 0, Quiz 9, and Quiz 10 (from Chapter 0, 9, 10). From the moment you access Exam 1 you will have exactly 60 minutes to complete it.

Exam 2 has 65 questions and is worth 25%. You can take Exam 2 anytime you want, 24/7 but only after you have earned 40% or greater on Quiz 11 and Quiz 12 (Chapters 11 and 12) and if you earned 25% or greater on Exam 1. From the moment you access Exam 2 you will have exactly 60 minutes to complete it.

Exam 3 has 100 questions and is worth 36%. You can take Exam 3 anytime you want, 24/7 but only after you have earned 40% or greater on Quiz 13, 14, 15, and 16 (Chapters 13, 14, 15, and 16) and if you earned 25% or greater on Exam 2. From the moment you access Exam 3 you will have exactly 90 minutes to complete it. Exam 3 must be completed before 23:59 EDT on August 23, 2015.

All three exams will include approximately 60% of material that is in both the text and in lectures; approximately 30% that is presented in the textbook only; and approximately 10% that is in the lecture only. All three exams will be non-cumulative.

Open Question: I will ask a number of Open Questions in the video Modules and they are also listed on the course web pages. Pick one that interests you and write a 400-1000 word paper and submit it via the Brightspace Assignment Dropbox. The Open Question is worth 4% of your final grade and is due at any time before you write Exam 3. The Exams, Quizzes, and Open Question together add up to 100%. However, you can actually earn more than 100% in this course! (See Grade Raising Options below.)

GRADE RAISING OPTIONS IN PSYC1001: Students in PSYC1002 have the opportunity to increase their final grade by electing to participate in online psychological research conducted by Carleton University Psychology faculty, or by graduate students under the supervision of members of the Department. This option will provide you with some first-hand experience within the field of experimental psychology. The maximum grade-raise per course is 4%. Details on these options are available on the departmental research participation page: Participating in Psychological Research (SONA) – Psychology. Make sure that you read and understand the correct protocols or else you risk being denied credit for your participation.
