M.A./Ph.D. Psychology (Clinical or Experimental Stream)

Many graduate psychology programs will require you to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). You may need the GRE General Test, the GRE Subject Test or both depending on which school and program you are applying to. Check out the GRE Requirements for Canadian University Graduate Psychology Programs.

Applying to a clinical program? GPA requirements will be higher for clinical programs. Visit National Research Council Rankings of Canadian and American Clinical Ph.D. programs . Check out the APA and CPA websites for more information about education and training for psychology.

Counselling Programs: Canadian Therapy and Counselling Programs

To be a licensed mental health provider you do not necessarily need a  PhD in clinical psychology. There are some university programs which offer training at the M.A. level (e.g. University of Ottawa, M.A./M.Ed. program in Counselling) and one program at Memorial University in Newfoundland  which offers a Psy.D. degree (a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, without the research requirements).

St. Paul University in Ottawa offers a Certificate in Couple Counselling and Spirituality, an M.A. in Counselling and Spirituality and a Ph.D. in Counselling and Spirituality.

The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) in Toronto offers an Adult Education and Counselling Psychology Program, as well as a Human Development and Applied Psychology Program.
