Richard Yu has been elevated to IEEE Fellow as of January 1, 2018, for contributions to mobility management and radio resource allocation in mobile wireless networks. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement.

His innovative technologies of integrating heterogeneous wireless networks have been adopted in cellular networks standards.
