Social media and the web offer unprecedented connectivity but, without conscious effort, can insulate us from everyone but “friends” and from ideas that might challenge strongly-held beliefs. Pace University communications professor and blogger Andrew Revkin will describe extraordinary innovations, showing how bottom-up and peer-to-peer communication can fill gaps as the old information gatekeepers–from sage broadcasters to newspaper front pages (to university professors)–lose influence.
