A passionate advocate for native language revitalization.
After writing about Indigenous issues for the Globe and Mail and Indigenous media – as well as hosting long-time CBC Radio program Our Native Land – in the 1980s, Owennatekha Brian Maracle began learning Kanyen’keha (Mohawk) and subsequently co-founded Onkwawenna Kentyohkwa, a community-based adult language immersion program. A passionate advocate for native language revitalization and author of two acclaimed books, Maracle received the Six Nations Community Treasure Award in 2008.
