Derek is a PhD Candidate whose research interests focus on Indigenous social movements and activism in Canada, identities, and decolonization. His current research explores discourses of violence that surround Indigenous resistance and their relationship to projects of decolonization. Derek is also an instructor within the department teaching courses that explore relationships between media and activism. Prior to returning to academia, Derek worked as a communication and public relations professional in the non-profit sector and in federal politics.
