Biography

Lowell Gasoi is an instructor in communication studies at both Carleton and at the University of Ottawa. A 2017 Vanier Canada Scholar, Lowell holds a BA and MA in media and communication studies from Concordia University in Montreal and earned his PhD at Carleton in 2021. His dissertation research examines the relationship between artists and elements of the Canadian cultural policy apparatus, questions that have emerged from more than 25 years of experience as a theatre-maker and arts administrator.

Lowell teaches courses in foundational theories in communication and media, research methods, discourse, and the creative and cultural industries. He has published research, both here in Canada and internationally, that explores intermedial theatre and memory, the performance of political dissent, and cultural policy in the wake of the #metoo movement. His wider research interests are in the areas of presence and liveness in art world advocacy, and the intersection of performance and communication and media studies.
