    Biography

Nasim Omidian earned a PhD in Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies from Carleton University’s School of Linguistics and Language Studies (SLaLS). Her dissertation research examines the representation of Syrian refugees in Canadian newspapers. She holds an MA in Language and Mind, Cognitive Linguistics from the University of Siena, Italy.

With nearly a decade of hands-on experience as a news writer in the Iranian media, including work with the Tehran Times, Nasim brings a linguistic background combined with a communication-oriented research perspective to her scholarship. Her research interests include corpus-assisted discourse analysis and Critical Discourse Studies, with a focus on how media discourse can intentionally or unintentionally create, maintain, or challenge societal bias, discrimination, inequality, and injustice. Currently, she is comparing the representation of Syrian and Ukrainian refugees in Canadian national newspapers.

Nasim joined the Department of Communication and Media Studies as a contract instructor in Winter 2025, teaching COMS 2300 (Communication as Propaganda).
