Co-operative Education Program

EURUS offers a co-op option for students enrolled in the MA program and BA students in their 4th year, allowing them to gain practical experience and skills while pursuing their studies. For more information visit the Co-op Services Website.

To be eligible you must have successfully completed, by the start-date of the first work term, the required first-year core classes (EURR 5001 and 5010). Please see the Graduate Calendar for other requirements. Students in the European, Russian and Eurasian Studies MA co-op option will be registered in EURR 5913 by the Co-op office when they are on a work term.

I was responsible for writing two ongoing newsletters. One newsletter followed developments in Georgia and Azerbaijan and was produced weekly. The other followed developments in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan and was produced bi-weekly.

I was tasked to lead Canada’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on Egypt at the 34th Session of the Human Rights Council. I researched our mission reports, internal intelligence reporting, and various open-sourced data … I also consulted with the Egypt desk officer, the Canadian Embassy in Cairo, and numerous divisions within Global Affairs Canada. I analyzed this information, and synthesized it into a draft that served to underscore Canadian human rights concerns in Egypt.

I attended China Federal-Provincial-Territorial Working Group on my second week of working at FedDev Ontario. The working group was hosted by Global Affairs Canada and was to address the trade issues with China at the time.

The materials and content I worked on did relate to my studies. I conducted previous research on nuclear disarmament, counter-proliferation, proliferation issues, and national security issues that pertain to Canada and its allies. Being able to apply my knowledge in my work environment was a major plus for me, and is something that I consider necessary to have in any career or job position.

Internship Program

The Institute administers an optional internship program for 4th year undergraduate and Master’s students. Following a selection process, successful applicants are placed with an Ottawa-based organization during the winter semester for, on average, one day per week. Students selected for the internship program also register in a 0.5 credit course EURR 5301/4206 that supplements the internship experience. Many students have found the internship program to be integral to their time at EURUS as it provides them with valuable work experience in a field related to their studies, gives them the opportunity to network, and introduces possible career paths.
