The Math & Stats Graduate Student Society (MSGSS) is organized by and made up of volunteer graduate students from our School. Internally, we organize social and academic events for Math & Stats graduate students; externally, we represent the Math & Stats graduate student body on the GSA council. Below, we outline what our organization is responsible for in some more detail.

Grad Lounge

We have a great lounge space reserved for Math & Stats grad students in HP 3390, accessible by card swipe. Inside, you will find a fridge, microwave, and kettle for your use, beside a table with chairs. Couches are arranged around a flat-screen TV with some video games. Of course, we also have a blackboard! Come to the grad lounge to eat, relax, and meet fellow graduate students.

We also run a discord server, serving as our “virtual lounge”. Please email the society president with your Carleton email for a link to join.

Grad Seminar

We plan to organize a regularly held winter colloquium in Winter 2024, where graduate students can present their research progress and strengthen presentation skills. Expect pizza! Presenting in front of an audience is a great way to learn and understand material. If you’re interested in contributing a talk, contact the society president with your Carleton email. Everyone is welcome!

Social Events

We plan to hold two evening socials this year, at the end of the Fall 2023 and Winter 2024 terms. Come by to de-stress before your comps and eat some delicious food. Want to see/run more social events involving the MSGSS? Contact the society president with your Carleton email, and we can organize the event together.

GSA Council

The Graduate Student Association council meets once a month to discuss the status of the association and to address any pertinent financial, academic, or political issues. Up to two (2) representatives of the MSGSS can attend these meetings to vote, keep us up to date with the GSA, and voice any concerns/ideas from the Math & Stats grad student body. All graduate students may attend these meetings, but only the councillors can vote.

New Executive Members

The society is always interested in new executive members. Duties would include regular meetings, and contributing to the organization of the events mentioned. If interested, please contact us (see below).
