Fundamentals of Geometry – Part II

Grade 8-9 Students (September to May)
The School of Mathematics and Statistics at Carleton University offers a non-credit enrichment course for students in grade 8-9.

In this sequel course more advanced topics in Geometry will be studied, including an introduction to trigonometry and 3-dimensional geometry.  Completion of Fundamentals of Geometry I is a prerequisite.

We propose to cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to Trigonometry
  • Triangle – Metric relations
  • Circle (Advanced properties)
  • 3 D Geometry – Points, Lines and Planes in Space
  • Solid figures:
    (i) Polyhedra (prism, pyramid, truncated pyramid) and
    (ii) Non-polyhedra (cylinder, cone, truncated cone, sphere)

These topics will be covered in-depth and are not related to Ontario Elementary or Secondary School Curriculum.

Fundamentals of Geometry II is a required course for Competitive Math II.

2024/25 Course Information

This course will not be offered in 2024/25. It will run in 2025/26.

2025/26 Course Information

This course will be offered in-person on Thursdays 7:30-9:00pm from September, 2025 to May 2026, with a break in December in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, MacPhail Seminar Room, Room 4351 Herzberg Laboratories Building. Only students who did well in “Fundamentals of Geometry I” will be invited to register in this course. These students will receive personalized registration codes, which are non-transferable.

We reserve the right to cancel the course with a full refund if minimum registration is not reached.
