Andrew Caddell (MJ ’02) has a long list of credits to his name — to single out just a few: reporter, broadcaster, senior policy advisor, deputy director, trade commissioner. Now he adds “book author.” “The Goal: Stories about Our National Passion,” by Caddell, Dave Stubbs and Philip Caddell, launches this week in Montreal.
Here’s the story behind the story, in Caddell’s words:
“I began writing the stories back when I was in journalism school (2000-2002) and needed a break from the academic experience of writing my thesis. I approached Dave Stubbs, who had written two pieces on my father and my son for the Montreal “Gazette” in 2000 and 2002. Then began a series of near-acceptances, re-writes and frustration, which was balanced with encouragement by other writers, like Roy MacGregor.
“I am proud of the book; I think the messages in the book are both nostalgic and pertinent in a world in need of some encouragement or inspiration. While I would be overjoyed to be thought of as the “Anglo Roch Carrier” with my story of being an unsuccessful goaltender, it is simply very satisfying, after over a decade of writing and rejections, to see my name in print. And to hear how the stories have resonated with so-called “ordinary” Canadians, as that is what the book is all about.” The Goal was published by Deux Voiliers, a writers collective based in Aylmer. I am grateful to Ian Shaw, the publisher, for having taken a chance on me.
