On November 26, 2015, Merlyna Lim delivered a keynote speech entitled “Alternative Imaginations: Challenges in Researching Societal Implications of Communication and Media Technologies” at an annual conference on Communication, Media, and Sociology at the University of Atma Jaya, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
Lim, Canada Research Chair in Digital Media & Global Network Society, discussed major oversights and challenges in researching social, cultural, and political aspects and implications of media and communication technologies. She argued for non-deterministic and non-reductionist theoretical framework and called for alternative imaginations to allow the repositioning of people/human, their acts and their agencies from the margin (of technology) to the dialectic position vis-à-vis technology they use.
