Multi-Term Agreement Opportunity
Contract Instructor 2017-2018 and 2018-2019
Carleton University, Department of Biology

As per the Letter of Understanding on the Trial of Multi-Term Agreements, and pursuant to Article 16 of the CUPE 4600 Unit 2 Collective Agreement, applications are invited from members of the CUPE 4600-2 bargaining unit and other interested persons to teach the following Biology courses during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.

BIOL 2005 [0.5 credit] Human Physiology
Topics may include: neurophysiology, sensory reception, the skeletal system, muscular contraction, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, and the gastrointestinal system. Preclusion: credit will not be given if taken concurrently with, or after BIOL 3305 or BIOL 3306. Students in Biology and Biochemistry programs may only take this course as a free elective.
Prerequisite(s): BIOL 1003 or BIOL 1103 and (CHEM 1001 and CHEM 1002) or (CHEM 1005 and CHEM 1006) or permission of the Department.
Lectures three hours a week.

  • Total Number of Sections Offered as part of the MTA: four (4) sections (0.5 credit each)
  • Terms Offered: Fall 2017, Summer 2018, Fall 2018, and Summer 2019

BIOL 4905 [1.0 credit] Honours Workshop
Within the context of an active learning environment, students participate in a variety of activities which may include literature reviews and critiques, media releases and response papers, oral presentations, and posters. Projects are focused on an area of biological research of interest to the student.
Precludes additional credit for BIOL 4907 and BIOL 4908.
Prerequisite(s): fourth-year standing in an Honours biology program and permission of the Department.
Workshops three hours per week.

  • Terms Offered: Fall/Winer 2017-18, and Fall/Winter 2018-19

Required Qualifications: 

Candidates should hold at least an MSc in Biology, Biochemistry, or related field, and demonstrate teaching competence in a relevant area, preferably at the university level.  Priority will be given to candidates holding a PhD. For first and second year courses priority will be given to those with experience teaching large classes.

A note to all applicants: As per Articles 16.3 and 16.4 in the CUPE 4600-2 Collective Agreement, the posted vacancies listed above are first offered to applicants meeting the incumbency criterion. A link to the current CUPE 4600-2 Collective Agreement can be found at the Employment Agreements webpage on the Carleton University Human Resources website and the CUPE 4600-2.  Sections assigned as part of the Multi-Term Agreement will be included in the limit for courses that may be taught by a contract instructor in one academic year. The limit is not more than two (2) full-credit courses over the Fall and Winter Terms, and not more than three (3) full-credit courses in any academic year ending August 31. Additionally, all of the above listed positions are subject to budgetary approval.
