Carleton’s international undergraduate students now have access to a Leave of Absence (LOA) request process, a collaborative initiative of the ISSO and the Registrar’s Office.

Illness or injury, family situations, academic suspension, deferral or change of program are some of the reasons why a student may need or wish to take a break from their studies for a term. But most international students are subject to immigration regulations that say they must remain enrolled. Many are also concerned about their eligibility for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) which can be lost if there is a gap term on their transcript.

A LOA authorized by Carleton will be considered by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as an “authorized leave” from studies. Study permit compliance and PGWP eligibility are not at risk during an authorized leave provided that the leave lasts no more than 150 days, and that the student does not work in Canada until they return to full-time studies.

Students who are considering not registering or withdrawing during a Fall or Winter term should first consult an immigration advisor at the ISSO, who will assist them to make the LOA request if that is advised: immigration.advising@carleton.ca

Students can learn more about the conditions that apply to study permit holders at the IRCC website.
