In these troubled times, the ISSO immigration advising team wants you to take care… of your temporary resident status in Canada.
We would like you to know:
- You must take note of the expiry date of your study permit. Carleton doesn’t have that information on file and can’t remind you. We urge you to take action to renew your status in Canada sometime before that date, perhaps up to 3-4 months before if you need a new passport, or if you have travel plans.
- You do not have an additional 90 days after the expiry date to renew your study permit. If you do not submit an application for renewal of status before the expiry date of your current permit, you must stop studying and working immediately. You have no status in Canada. If this is discovered by Canadian authorities, you may receive a removal order. This could lead to deportation, and difficulty in re-entering Canada in the future.
You might have an option to apply to restore your status. Restoration is a more complicated application, with an additional $200 fee.
- If you aren’t able to get some documents you need for a renewal application, such as a new passport or some Carleton documents, you should contact the ISSO’s immigration advisors. We can often advise you on how to apply on time anyway.
- Your study permit can become invalid before the expiry date if you leave school and remain in Canada. Depending on your plans, you may be able to apply to change your temporary status so you can stay in Canada.
- If you have applied for permanent residence or plan to, you remain a temporary resident until you are confirmed as a Canadian permanent resident. You must maintain valid status that allows you to stay in Canada and authorizes your study or work activities.
Most importantly, we want you to know that the ISSO’s immigration advising team is always available to provide information and support. Please don’t wait until you are at risk of losing your status.
