International students travelling to Canada for Fall 2024 at Carleton can start planning now to have a smooth arrival. New students who have their travel authorization and initial approval for a study permit may refer to guidance from the Canada Border Services Agency about what documents they should carry and be prepared to show upon arrival.
In addition to the required documents, the ISSO recommends that students bring and be familiar with the contents of their study permit application, whether it was done by themselves, a family member, or a representative. CBSA issues a study permit to the student after their examination at the Port of Entry. It’s a good idea to look over the study permit right away. That’s the best time and place to fix errors or ask questions. Also note the expiry date of the permit. It’s a student’s responsibility to know that date, and to contact the ISSO about how to renew their study permit if they need more time to complete their program.
Returning Carleton students are also subject to an examination upon re-entering Canada, to ensure that they meet general entry requirements (related to things like health, finances, and being law-abiding), and that they are authorized to study and intending to study in Canada. For more information, they can refer to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s information for students re-entering Canada.
