Do you need to renew your study permit in 2024? Study permit renewals are not subject to the new caps announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and do not require letters of attestation.

Here are some timely tips from the ISSO’s immigration advising team:

  • Apply before the expiry date of your current permit, without fail. If you are new to the process, consult the ISSO about four months ahead of time.
  • If getting a new passport is taking longer than expected, don’t let that stop you from applying to renew on time! Contact the ISSO for instructions.
  • If you are in Canada, use an IRCC secure account to apply for renewal, following instructions in the ISSO’s Application Guide. Do not use the IRCC Portal, which is for study permit applications outside of Canada, and not for renewals.
  • If IRCC requests additional documents after your initial submission, consult the ISSO before responding.
  • If you need a new visa to travel to Canada, you must make a second application for the visa after your new study permit is approved. A study permit does not authorize travel to Canada.
  • If you are a continuing Carleton student who is not currently in Canada, you can’t apply for renewal. You must make a visa office application for a new study permit. Contact the ISSO for instructions.
