Carleton University has awarded its very first IP Impact Award to a team behind an exciting advancement in satellite communications.

Professor Halim Yanikomeroglu from the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering, along with Mohammed Abdelsadek (former postdoc) and Gunes Karabulut Kurt (adjunct research professor), developed a patented system that allows LEO satellites to connect directly with handheld devices using distributed MIMO technology.

The innovation, created in Carleton’s Non-Terrestrial Networks Lab, has already caught the attention of industry—MDA Space, a leading Canadian aerospace company, has purchased the technology.
