Undergraduate Students Taking Graduate Courses
Undergraduate Students Taking Graduate Courses
Select undergraduate BEng students may be eligible to take graduate courses as part of the accelerated pathway program. Students are limited to courses offered by the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering (SYSC and BIOM courses). Interested students should contact the Undergraduate Chair to learn more.
Taking Undergraduate Courses
For Master of Applied Science and Master of Engineering students only.
At the start of a program a student or supervisor may identify an undergraduate curriculum area that a student requires additional knowledge base in so that the student may proceed with their studies or research. Please review the instructions relevant to your program of study below. Please note that PhD students are not permitted to take 4th year courses for credit.

MASc Students
MASc students who require additional background to assist their thesis may receive direction from their supervisor(s), and on the basis of this direction, submit a formal request.
MASc students may request permission to register in one course (0.5 credits) at the 4th year level. This course should normally be a course that the student has not taken during their undergraduate degree and is yet needed as background or prerequisite for other graduate courses in the same area of research;
To register in an undergraduate course, you must obtain written approval from your thesis supervisor for any 4th year course that you intend to take for credit and share the permission with the department (sysc.gradmin@cunet.carleton.ca);
After approval is granted, the Engineering Academic Support request form must be completed (equivalent to an override request): Engineering Request Form;
Prerequisite enforcement is at the discretion of the course instructor, and enrolment is subject to space within the course.
MEng Students
In rare circumstances, Master of Engineering (MEng) students who require additional knowledge base to proceed in their studies may be allowed to take 4th year undergraduate courses (up to 1.0 credits with approval). Please consult the below instructions before proceed to making a formal request.
Meng students may request permission to register in up to two courses (1.0 credits) at the 4th year level. These courses should normally be courses that the student have not taken during their undergraduate degree and are yet needed as background or prerequisite for other graduate courses in the same general area of study;
To register in an undergraduate course, MEng students must present a strong rationale to sysc.gradmin@cunet.carleton.ca;
If approved, MEng students must complete the process by submitting their request via the Engineering Academic Support request form: Engineering Request Form;
Prerequisite enforcement is at the discretion of the course instructor, and enrolment is subject to space within the course.
