A five-minute news documentary by three Carleton Master of Journalism students is a semifinalist in TVO’s 2016 Short Doc Contest.

Tammy’s Story — co-produced by Roberta Bell, Gareth Madoc-Jones and Sarah Peterson — is about Tammy Lynn Lamondin-Gagnon, an indigenous woman who went missing in 1999.

In telling Tammy’s story, the MJs spoke with her mother, Jacqueline Gagnon. Their resulting doc aims to highlight the strength and resiliency of indigenous communities and peoples who have lost loved ones.

Bell, Madoc-Jones and Peterson originally produced the documentary for Prof. Elly Alboim’s broadcast seminar.

As semifinalists in the Short Doc Contest, they said they hope Tammy’s Story will reach a larger audience.

Contest finalists will be announced on April 7. After that, members of the public can vote to choose the winner. Final voting will be April 7-18. Check the TVO website for details.
